The State Electric Company (STELCO) has planted over 36,000 trees in the three months since it launched a project to plant 500,000 trees over the next five years.

STELCO launched the 500,000-tree project on June 5, in celebration of the World Environment Day. The project began simultaneously in all 33 islands the company is based in.

In a statement on Wednesday, STELCO said it has planted 36,825 trees as of September 30.

It has 463,175 trees left to plant in order to reach its goal.

STELCO’s managing director Hassan Fahmy said that the company remains fully committed to its goal of planting 500,000 trees over the next five years.

“Since the program began in June 2024, we have consistently met our target of planting approximately 9,200 trees per month. At this pace, we are confident that we will reach our goal of 500,000 trees within 60 months,” he said.

Fahmy said that the initiative will undoubtedly benefit future generations and have a lasting positive impact on the environment.

He extended his gratitude to the staff of STELCO, council members, and the community for their invaluable support in driving the initiative forward.

STELCO’s 500,000-tree project was launched to contribute to the program launched by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to plant five million trees in five years, which was also launched the same day.

According to the President’s Office, the initiative “reflects the government's commitment to safeguarding the country's fragile ecological systems and mitigating the impact of climate change for the benefit of current and future generations.”

The project seeks to plant trees that are endangered in the Maldives. As such, the project will see the planting of 90 species of trees.
