President meets with Maldivian community residing in New York

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has met with the Maldivian community residing in New York during his current visit to the United States to attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The meeting took place on Sunday at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the UN.

During the meeting, President Muizzu listened to the concerns of the Maldivians residing in the United States and inquired about their needs.

 He also asked about the challenges they were encountering and how the government could assist them.

President Muizzu said that the administration would always strive to progress by engaging in open dialogue and listening attentively to the people. He added that the government is committed to developing policies that reflect the concerns and needs of the people.

Prior to the meeting, President signed the guest book of the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the UN.

President Muizzu is set to address the UNGA on Tuesday. However, he has been attending various events on the sidelines of the general assembly.

He also met with the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Sunday at the UN headquarters in New York.

At the meeting, President Muizzu emphasized the Maldives' commitment to playing a more active role in the UN system, particularly on key issues affecting Small Island Developing States (SIDS). He also briefed Guterres on the fiscal challenges facing the country, adding that the government is working on a fiscal reform agenda to bring down debt and fiscal conditions to a sustainable level. He stressed the importance of support from bilateral and multilateral partners in this effort.

During the meeting, Guterres commended the Maldives for its efforts in addressing global challenges, particularly on climate change adaptation. He reiterated his full commitment to supporting the Maldives in its adaptation efforts and in tackling other pressing challenges faced by the nation.

President Muizzu concluded the meeting by thanking Guterres and expressing his appreciation for the UN's efforts to provide opportunities for all member nations to address global concerns under his leadership.
