Three assaults in two days; zero arrests

The police have yet to make an arrest in any of the three cases of assault which took place in the Maldives over the last two days.

The first took place in the southern city of Addu on Friday morning, the second in Hulhumale’ on early Saturday, and the third in Male’ City on Saturday afternoon.

A spokesperson from the police confirmed to Sun on Sunday morning that they have yet to make an arrest in any of the three days.

On Friday, a man was attacked in his home in the Hithadhoo district of Addu. He was treated at the Addu Equatorial Hospital and discharged the same day.

The police did not disclose the extent of his injuries nor any other details regarding the attack.

However, an unverified social media post claims the attack took place overnight when masked men entered the victim’s home and attacked him. The post included photos purportedly of the man bleeding and being put into an ambulance.

On Saturday, the police said they received a report at around 03:50 am of a male expatriate getting attacked in Hulhumale’. He sustained head injuries in the attack and was initially treated at the Hulhumale’ Hospital before getting transferred to the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for a consult with a neuro surgeon.

 The second case on Saturday took place in Male’ City and was reported to the police at around 06:40 pm. According to the police, the assailants entered the home victim, a Maldivian man, and attacked him. He was taken to the IGMH for treatment.

The Maldives, especially its capital Male’, has seen a rise in cases of assault and armed robberies in recent weeks.
