President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reestablished Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) under Section 8(a) of the Food Safety Act, designated as an authority under the Health Ministry.
The re-establishment was announced in the President's Office Directive 17/2024.
The re-establishment will effectively abolish Maldives Food and Drug Authority previously under the Health Ministry.
As per the directive, all correspondence addressed to MFDA shall use the number 182 in the numbering system for state agencies.
The Food and Safety came into force on Friday.
During a press conference on Thursday, Health Minister Dr. Abdul Khaleel said MFDA will have added powers with the act’s implementation, including the discretion to fine illegal or unregistered food vendors and businesses between MVR 50,000 and MVR 100,000. MFDA will also have the power to seal such venues under the new act.
