Maldives’ friendship with India has evolved to foster prosperity and development in the Maldives and the larger South East Asian region, says President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, in a congratulatory message on occasion of India’s Independence Day.

In a post on X on Thursday morning, President Muizzu congratulated India’s President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India on occasion of the country’s 78th Independence Day.

He said that India has fostered prosperity and development in the Maldives, and beyond.

“Our enduring friendship, rooted in history, has evolved to foster prosperity and development in the Maldives and the region,” he said.

President Muizzu expressed confidence the Maldives-India partnership will continue to strengthen in the future.

“As we look to the future, I am confident that our partnership will continue to strengthen, driving mutual prosperity and shared goals,” he said.

India celebrates its Independence Day on August 15, commemorating the country’s independence from the United Kingdom on August 15, 1947, when the provisions of the Indian Independence Act, which transferred legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly, came into effect.

Relations between Maldives and India had been strained at the beginning of President Muizzu’s administration, but things now appear to be on the mend, with key visits between Male’ and New Delhi in recent months, including a visit by Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to Maldives last week.
