The Maldives and India have engaged in discussions regarding deepening collaboration in renewable energy.

The discussions took place on Wednesday in a meeting between Maldivian Deputy Minister for Tourism and Environment, Hussain Ageel Naseer and Indian Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Pralhad Joshi.

The bilateral meeting took place on the sidelines of the 8th session of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly in Indian capital, New Delhi.

In a statement on Thursday, the Tourism and Environment Ministry said the discussions focused on deepening collaboration to push renewable energy forward, with both speaking in length on increasing the use of renewable energy, and starting new initiatives.

At the meeting, Ageel highlighted on the vulnerability of Maldives as a small island nation, and said that the government believes solar energy to be the key to improving the country’s energy resilience.

Meanwhile, Joshi provided assurance of India’s willingness to cooperate with the Maldives in boosting its energy resilience.

Both agreed that collaboration in renewable energy is crucial to protecting the environment and finding sustainable solutions to the energy needs of both countries, reads the statement.

At the COP28 summit in Dubai back in 2023, Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged to meet 33 percent of the Maldives’ energy requirements from renewable energy sources by 2028 – an investment he described as a vital commitment for the future of the low-lying island nation.

And in May 2025, the Maldives signed the Blue Planet Climate Agreement, committing to pursuing an aspirational goal of 100 percent renewable energy by 2050.
