President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has promised to implement important measures to minimize damage from the torrential rain currently affecting the Maldives, and produce results.

He made the promise in a post on X on Tuesday, amid an orange alert for torrential rain, thunderstorms and flooding in central Maldives.

President Muizzu said that the government will continue to give top priority to providing assistance to the people affected by the torrential rain in Male’ and islands across the country.

He said that one of the biggest goals of the planned project to modernize the roads of Male’ is to solve the issue of flooding.

“The project will provide a permanent solution to the long-standing issue of flooding in Male’. It will also solve this problem in islands once road development projects are prioritized and carried out as planned,” he said.

The government launched a large-scale project in May to curb flooding in the capital.

The project – launched with the initiation of President Muizzu – is being undertaken by the Defense Ministry and Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), in collaboration with the Infrastructure Ministry and Road Development Corporation (RDC).

The Maldivian government previously said that the project was initiated to provide a temporary solution to flooding, before a permanent one is found.
