President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu says he plans to build at least seven new schools within the next four years in order to ease congestion in the populous Maldivian capital.

President Muizzu, who resigned from his post as Male’ City mayor to assume office in November last year, visited his former office on Sunday morning. It marks the first time for a sitting president to visit the Male’ City Council for an official meeting.

At the meeting, President Muizzu said that Hulhumale’ is expected to host some 200,000 people once all three phases of the island are populated. He said that he wants there to be total 22 schools in Hulhumale’ to address the current shortage in schools there, as well the expected influx of more children of school age.

“We will look into the maximum number of schools that can be built within the next four years. We will try to finish building minimum seven schools or some 10 schools within the next four years,” he said.

President Muizzu said that it is a mega project, and one which will be costly.

He said that he will prioritize the project, despite the high cost.

President Muizzu told the city council that each of the new schools will accommodate around 1,500 students.

President Muizzu noted that scores of students commute from Hulhumale’ to Male’ City each day to attend school. He said that building around 10 new schools in Hulhumale’ will significantly ease the traffic it causes.

He said he hopes to receive the city council’s cooperation for the project.
