Japan commits USD 1.02M for human resource development scholarships

The Government of Japan has committed to a grant aid of USD 1.02 million (161 million Japanese Yen) to the Maldives for the continuation of scholarship opportunities which will be offered by the Government of Japan for the fiscal year 2024, under the Japanese Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS).

The Exchange of Notes pertaining to the grant was signed between the two countries on Tuesday with the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Takeuchi Midori representing the Japanese Government and Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer representing the Maldivian government.

Foreign Ministry states the grant will provide 6 scholarships again this year to the Maldivian students under the JDS project being implemented since August 2020 which is aimed at further promoting human resource development in the Maldives. Under this project, students are provided the opportunity to study up to Master’s Degree at top Japanese universities.

As per the Foreign Ministry, the purpose of the project is to build capable Maldivian youths who will play a crucial role in the formulation and implementation of social and economic development policies.

Tuesday’s signing ceremony at the Foreign Ministry was attended by Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development Dr. Maryam Mariya and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, Ministry of Finance, Civil Service Commission, the Embassy of Japan, and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Higher Education Ministry opened applications for the scholarships provided by the Japanese government on May 15th. The deadline to submit applications expired on June 3rd.
