Indian PM sends Eid greetings to President Muizzu

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has extended his wishes to Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha, emphasizing the "values of sacrifice, compassion, and brotherhood" as essential for building a peaceful world.

The festive message comes amidst strained relations between the two nations.

In a press release shared on X on Sunday, the Indian High Commission in Male’ shared the Indian prime minister's Eid wishes for the president, the government, and the people of Maldives.

In his message, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the values of sacrifice, compassion and brotherhood, embodied by the Eid, which he said are essential in building a peaceful and inclusive world.

He also highlighted the celebration of the festival, as part of India's multi-cultural heritage, across the length and breadth of India, with fervor and gaiety.

Tensions broke out between Male’ and Delhi, after President Muizzu demanded the complete withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives.

In response, India withdrew its troops ahead of the May 10th deadline.

Tensions also worsened, after three deputy ministers made disparaging social media remarks about Modi, back in January.

The three ministers were subsequently suspended, and the Foreign Ministry released a statement saying the comments do not reflect the views of the Male’ government.

Despite these tensions, Prime Minister Modi's Eid greeting to President Muizzu could indicate India's efforts to mend ties, and bring relations back on track.

President Muizzu was also invited to attend Prime Minister Modi’s oath-taking ceremony earlier this month.

It followed Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer’s visit to Delhi, last month.
