Russian tourist dies after drowning in resort

A tourist has died after drowning at a resort in Kaafu Atoll.

Police said they received a report at 11:30am Friday morning, informing them that a tourist, who ventured into the sea for snorkeling, was being transported to ADK Hospital in Male’ City for treatment after drowning.

Citing the hospital, Police said the tourist was declared dead on arrival.

They identified the tourist as a 67-year-old Russian male.

Notably, Maldives is experiencing intense monsoon rains, with strong winds, promoting the Police to advise the public against all non-essential travel. The agency also advised the public against going to picnics in uninhabited islands and going swimming.

On Thursday, a Maldivian man from Hithadhoo, Addu City, who was working in a resort died while rescuing a tourist who was struggling to swim in the resort island’s waters.

The tourist survived, and is doing well, according to the police.
