The Maldives has called on the United Nations Security Council to re-consider the admission of Palestine as a full member state of the world body.

The call was made during the 10th Emergency Special Session held on Friday regarding the Palestine UN membership resolution.

In Maldives’ statement, the nation noted the overwhelming support for the resolution sent a strong message to the Security Council. The Maldives also called on United Nations member states to act with urgency to stop the ongoing suffering in Palestine, and make Israel comply with its obligations under international law and international humanitarian law.

It was also emphasized in the statement that a comprehensive solution to the conflict in the Middle East can only be achieved with the recognition and establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The 193-member UN General Assembly approved the Resolution by a vote of 143-9 with 25 abstentions on Friday.

It “determines” that the state of Palestine is qualified for membership – dropping the intiiat text that in the General Assembly’s judgment it is “a peace-loving state”. Henceforth, the resolution recommends that the Security Council reconsider its request “favorably.”
