MDP to establish complaints system on job terminations

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) said it is working to develop a complaints system to address all politically-motivated job terminations during the current administration.

In a statement the party released commemorating the Labor Day, MDP claimed workers' rights were ensured only during the party's regimes. The party further said, during MDP's regime in 2008, the then government designated Labor Day as a public holiday for the first time.

The main opposition party further claimed it strengthened the workers' rights once it regained power back in 2018. MDP stewarded several important changes ensuring workers' rights, including the introduction of a minimum wage policy, equal disbursement of service charges, and paid maternity leave, the party said in its statement.

MDP also said the most revolutionary advancement in protecting workers' rights, was its successful introduction and implementation of the Industrial Relations Act, and the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

The opposition party however, said since Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed presidency, employees have been getting terminated from their public employment in the past six months due to their political leanings.

MDP condemned these acts, adding anyone who has been sacked for political reasons can soon mail to the party voicing their complaints.

The party further urged the current government to enhance the rights and opportunities extended to workers through the policies and legislations it passed during its regime.
