Elections Commission (EC) on Thursday has officially registered former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom-founded People's National Front (PNF).

Former Minister Mohamed Maleeh Jamaal, a member of the party's high-command, shared a digital copy of the Certificate of Registration extended by the commission.

PNC held its first congress to form the party earlier on April 10th, 2024, which faced unexpected hindrances owing to police intervention leading to a confrontation between the party members and officers.

The congress was held at a different location from the venue originally set, with the participation of 420 members, thus meeting the required 329-member quorum.

The former president's son Zeine Abdulla Yameen is the party's responsible head, making him the interim president of PNC as well.

During the party's congress, an interim senate was also appointed, which includes the former president as well while various permanent roles were allocated to various members.

Not long after the PPM/PNC coalition won the presidential election late last year, tensions between incumbent President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Yameen intensified leading to the latter resigning from PPM.

Since exiting from the party he led for years, Yameen began the work to found a new political party.

EC gave permission to register the new party earlier on November 29th, 2023.

Since the recent High Court decision to overturn his criminal sentence, Yameen is no longer barred from participating in political activities.
