The People’s National Front (PNF), the party of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, has announced that its upcoming 'Wakeup' event on Thursday night is not for political purposes, but rather to voice the feelings of the Maldivian people.
The party revealed details of the gathering last Thursday. This marks a departure from their usual series of meetings held at Yameen's residence, H. Dhoovehi, which have often been criticized by opponents as 'sitting room' meetings due to Yameen's outspoken critiques of the government and other parties. The 'Wakeup' event will be the PNF's first large-scale public rally.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, PNF leader and former minister Mohamed Maleeh Jamal stated that the movement aims to express the public's sentiments regarding the challenges facing the country. He emphasized that the event is open to all Maldivians.
Maleeh further added that demonstrating the feelings of the people is crucial for holding the government accountable, and this event provides that opportunity. Preparations for the meeting are set to begin on Saturday, with the PNF encouraging more participants from the atolls to attend. The party particularly hopes for larger participation, given widespread concerns about the youth and the government.
The event is scheduled for 08:30 hrs on Thursday at the artificial beach. Former President Yameen is expected to attend and address the gathering, according to the PNF.
Yameen formed the PNF and registered the party on March 25 last year, less than a week after stepping down as leader of the coalition when the PNC came to power. Since its inception, Yameen and his associates have consistently criticized the current government on various issues.
