Power has been restored to Velana International Airport (VIA) after resolving the issue that the airport was struck with earlier this morning.
The power went out at approximately 8:30am this morning, following a problem with the generators at the airport. Subsequently, the services of the Maldives’ main gateway to the world were disrupted.
The operator of VIA, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL)’s Communications Manager Shamman Shakir confirmed to Sun that the power had been restored.
The power outage resulted in the airport utilizing its backup generators for electricity.
In an earlier statement, Shamman said the reason behind the power outage was not immediately clear.
A person who was at the airport at the time of the power outage told Sun that the disrupted services led to many passengers being stuck at the airport – causing the airport to become overcrowded.
