President: High chance for disruption of govt if PNC does not win Majlis election

There is high chance for disruption of the system of governance if the people fail to give the main ruling PNC a majority in the upcoming parliamentary elections, said President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday, urging people to vote for government-endorsed candidates.

Addressing a gathering in GDh. Madaveli on Tuesday evening, President Muizzu said that the parliamentary elections give the people great power to decide on having projects conducted in accordance with their wishes.

He said that it is crucial that the government wins a majority in the Parliament in order to shape the government’s policies and decisions.

President Muizzu said that the system of governance in Maldives is neither strictly presidential nor parliamentary – but a combination of both – meaning that misuse of powers could disrupt the state.

“The Parliament is a key controlling power in structuring and directing the government. The Maldives has a system where the constitution gives it [the Parliament] the power to direct [the government.] It is a mixed system,” he said.

He asked voters to elect government-endorsed parliamentary candidates.

Speaking further, President Muizzu said that the development of Madaveli has remained severely stymied.

“There is much to be done – starting from the most important tasks,” he said.

President Muizzu said he plans on reclaiming land and providing housing in Madaveli.

Noting that fisheries is one of the key economic drivers of Madaveli, President Muizzu acknowledged that the small size of the island’s harbor poses a challenge to expanding the industry. He said that he plans on developing a modern harbor in the island.

He also pledged to expand the island’s school and upgrade the local health center, and to include Madaveli in the list of islands that will receive a new mosque, and develop sports facilities in the island.

“Overall, I will do everything the people desire,” he said.
