The ruling coalition, composed of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC), aims to win a supermajority in the Parliament with at least 62 seats, says President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The PPM-PNC coalition held its primaries for the parliamentary elections on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters after a visit to a polling station in Henveiru Stadium, President Muizzu said that the people appreciate and support his administration.

He also said that he does not believe the primaries will create internal division, with members leaving the coalition to contest the elections independently, as seen in the past.

“I hope we will not see a repeat of past incidents this time. I strongly believe members will prioritize the party’s interests and that of the nation, and will unite as one. I strongly believe this,” he said.

Addressing allegations of meddling in the PPM-PNC’s membership registry, President Muizzu said he does not believe such incidents took place.

He said such claims were made without proper verification.

“We want to hold a free and fair election. But complaints and allegations should be submitted, and we will look into it in a transparent and fair manner,” he said.

Over 71,000 PPM-PNC members were eligible to vote in Saturday’s primaries. President Muizzu said that despite some minor disturbances, voting went relatively peacefully.

The parliamentary elections is scheduled to take place on March 17. Representatives will be elected to 93 seats, which means parties need to win at least 62 seats in order win a two-thirds or a supermajority in the Parliament.
