The inaugural sitting of the first session of the parliament for the prevailing year will be held on February 5th.

The parliament secretariate in a message to the media on Sunday said Speaker Mohamed Aslam has decided to schedule the inaugural sitting of the first session of this year for 9:00am on February 5th.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who took oath office on November 17th of last year, will have to deliver his first-ever presidential address at the inaugural sitting of the parliament.

While the new administration nears two months in office, the parliament has yet to grant approval to the cabinet.

The parliament’s Government Oversight Committee voted to approve President Muizzu’s cabinet on December 30th, after the parliament broke for recess.

The same day, main opposition MDP which holds the majority in the parliament initiated efforts to collect signatures from MPs to hold an extraordinary sitting out of session to vote on the cabinet. However, no date has yet been announced for sitting.
