President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu says that Rasmale’ – being developed under his administration’s biggest housing project – will be run on renewable energy.

Speaking at the launch of the project in Fushidhiggaru Falhu on Monday, President Muizzu said that Rasmale’ will be developed in line with international standards for climate adaptation. He said the reclaimed land will rise up to three meters at the center, and two meters along the coastline.

“Therefore, the reclaimed land will fit the criteria for a safe island according to international standards,” he said.

President Muizzu said his administration will also factor in the effects of climate change in developing the infrastructure.

He said Rasmale’ will be a zero-carbon, green and pleasant city.

“This means that even the vehicles will run on renewable energy. Either electric or battery powered. We will use renewable energy in all facilities here, and run the entire city using renewable energy sources,” he said.

“In Sha Allah, this place will be branded internationally as Maldives Eco City.”

President Muizzu had used his executive powers to remove Fushidhiggaru Falhu from the jurisdiction of K. Gulhi, in order to run the project.

The project will see the reclamation of 1,113 hectors, which President Muizzu said is triple the size of both phases of Hulhumale’ combined.

The project is contracted to Sri Lanka’s Capital Marine and Civil Construction (CMCC).
