President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has constituted the Maldives Zakat House.

He established the new office with the authority vested in him by Article 116 of the Constitution.

It will be run under the Islamic Ministry.

According to the President’s Office, the Maldives Zakat House was mandated to fortify the Maldivian zakat system, and do everything necessary to expand the Zakat Fund by investing in areas where Shariah has approved Zakat, thereby maximizing distributor benefits.

In accordance with the numbering system for state agencies, the President's Office has issued a directive that all correspondence to the Maldives Zakat House should use the number 496.

Maldives Zakat House is mandated to:

  • Provide a mechanism for accepting and disbursing zakat
  • Announce the nisab for zakat al-mal twice a year
  • Regularly update the national registry of individuals below the poverty line

The establishment of the Zakat House is one of President Muizzu’s electoral pledges.
