President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu paid a call on President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at his office on Sunday, a day after he beat the incumbent in the presidential election runoff.

Muizzu arrived at the President’s Office at around 03:00 pm Sunday.

Muizzu, from the opposition PPM-PNC coalition, won the presidential election runoff held on Saturday with 54 percent of votes, beating President Solih, the MDP candidate, who won 46 percent.

In his first press conference as president-elect on Saturday night, Muizzu asked President Solih to use his executive powers to transfer the leader of the opposition PPM-PNC coalition, former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, to home confinement.

He said the move was in the “best interests of the country.”

Yameen was transferred from Maafushi Prison to Male' City around the same time as Muizzu’s meeting with the President Solih on Sunday.

In a post on X on Saturday night, President Solih conceded defeat, and congratulated Muizzu.

In his message, President Solih thanked the Maldivian people “for the exemplary show of democratic principles in the election.”

His party, MDP, has also congratulated Muizzu.

MDP’s chairperson Fayyaz Ismail said that as the opposition, MDP would continue to responsibly hold the government accountable, and ensure the protection of democratic principles in the Maldives.
