Muizzu appeals to president for Yameen’s transfer to home confinement

President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu holds a press conference after the presidential election on September 30, 2023.

Opposition PPM-PNC coalition’s presidential candidate who won the 2023’s presidential election has appealed for the transfer of jailed opposition leader, former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom to home confinement from the incumbent president, Ibrahim Mohamed Solil

At the first press conference as the president-elect on late Saturday night – Muizzu took a moment to deliver an appeal to President Solih, requesting to shift Yameen to home confinement.

“The president has the power to shift Yameen to home confinement. Doing so, is the best course of action in the interest of the country,” he said.

Speaking further, Muizzu said today’s result had emboldened him to build the future of the nation. He added that it had also been a step in the right path to ensure the independence of the nation.

“This stands testament to how much Maldivian citizens desire to brighten the future of the nation,” he added.

Muizzu, citing it was the time for everyone to unite, stressed national interest was far more important than one’s own personal interest. He said peace can be established across the nation with such thinking.

He added that his words and actions will not contradict. The president-elect said that all Maldivian citizens are equal before him, no matter their political affiliation. He said everyone was equally entitled to rights.

It was Yameen who was initially supposed to contest this presidential election on PPM-PNC’s ticket. However, the Supreme Court found him ineligible for the presidency in light of his money laundering and bribery conviction just two days ahead of the deadline to file candidacy.

PNC’s senate had then decided to contest the election, as a plan B. Muizzu won PNC’s ticket after competing with Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef.
