PNC’s leader, and the acting leader of PPM/PNC coalition, Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey), remarking that this was not the time for a referendum to decide the governing system, has stated that what is in the constitution is most wanted by the people.
He said this while speaking at a campaign rally for the presidential candidate of PPM/PNC, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, at N. Lhohi.
He said that the leader of PPM and former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has always worked in line with the people’s decisions, adding he will put the people and the nation before anything else.
“And so, the people’s decision is to keep the presidential system in this country. That is the system that we support,” Adhurey said.
The Democrats, the political party spearheaded by former President Mohamed Nasheed, is vying to go for a vote to change the governing system before the second round of the 2023 presidential elections is held. However, both PPM and MDP agreed to go to a vote to decide the governing system after the presidential elections have concluded.
Therefore, the parliament today passed a resolution to ask the Election Commission to hold a yes or no vote on the change of the system before the 30th of next month.
