Imprisoned former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom on Sunday urged to garner more support towards the presidential candidate of People's National Congress (PNC), and secure his victory in the second round of voting.

The first round of voting for the presidential election of 2023 was held on September 9, and the preliminary results have since been announced as well.

As per the Election Commission’s (EC) results so far, Dr. Muizzu and MDP’s candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih moved to the second round, having secured 46 and 38 percent, respectively.

After meeting with Yameen, his lawyer and former Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel tweeted a message from him.

The message relied asked for more support towards Dr Muizzu, and win the election. Moreover, Dr Jameel said that he expressed that this was a good opportunity to get rid of the foreign military presence, and make the country independent.

A second round of voting has been set for September 30, as none of the eight candidates were able to gain over 50 percent of the votes.

The Constitution dictates that the election can conclude within one round only if a single candidate is able to secure more than 50 percent of the votes.
