Maldives Correctional Service, on Monday, revealed to have not gotten a request from the jailed opposition leader Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom to attend the funeral of his mother.

Yameen’s mother, Fathimath Hassan passed away in Sri Lanka early Monday morning. She passed away at the age of 86 after a long illness. Her funeral is scheduled for tonight, in Sri Lanka.

Yameen’s party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in a condolence message released on Monday, stressed it was disheartening he has been deprived of the opportunity to attend his mother’s funeral.

“It is extremely disheartening that Yameen has been deprived of the opportunity to attend his mother’s funeral at the time of her passing as he remains incarcerated over an unjust jail sentence imposed by the current administration’s cruelty," the statement read.

A spokesperson from Corrections told Sun they have not received a request from Yameen, in any form, to attend his mother’s funeral.

Sun was unsuccessful in its efforts to obtain a comment from Yameen’s lawyers regarding the matter.

Fathimath Hassan is survived by six children. She was living in Sri Lanka alongside her daughter Muslima Abdul Gayyoom. She is also the aunt of Velidhoo MP Abdulla Shafeeq.
