PPM-PNC invites other parties to team up at Parliament

The opposition coalition, composed of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) has issued an open invitation to other political parties to join them in their work at the Parliament.

In a tweet Tuesday, the PPM-PNC coalition said they needed to reinforce efforts to hold the government accountable.

We invite MPs and parties to join us to accomplish this, said the coalition.

The invitation comes after MPs loyal to the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) joined an alliance with the PPM-PNC coalition, along with Jumhoory Party (JP) and Maldives National Party (MNP) over how the government delt with the disputed maritime territory between Maldives and Mauritius.

The opposition is preparing to submit a no-confidence motion against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih over the issue.

PNC’s deputy leader Adam Shareef Umar said the recent parliamentary debates and motions submitted to the Parliament shows efforts to find “an alternative to Ibu”.

He added that all political parties, except for two, wish to bring an end to President Solih’s administration.

The opposition alliance currently has 13 former MDP MPs who are now working to form a new party – The Democrats, and six MPs from PPM, two MPs from PNC, three MPs from MNP, and two from JP.
