Bangladesh government has announced its decision to facilitate long-term visas for Maldivian students studying and undertaking internships in Bangladeshi government-approved educational institutions in the nation for the term of their course duration or internship.

Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid announced the good news via a tweet on Friday.

In his tweet, Minister Shahid thanked the Bangladeshi government and his Bangladeshi counterpart, Dr. A K Abdul Momen for the facilitation.

The decision will pave way for long-term visas for Maldivian students studying and undertaking internships in Bangladeshi government-approved educational institutions in the country – for the term of their course duration or internship.

Prior to this, local students and interns in Bangladesh had to renew their visas annually. Moreover, they faced significant difficulties in obtaining the visa itself. The decision by Bangladesh’s government will ease these difficulties.

Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had previously held discussions with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on facilitating long-term visas for Maldivian students in Bangladesh. The meeting also led to Bangladesh issuing on-arrival visas for Maldivians.

Many Maldivian students reside in Bangladesh.
