Two undocumented workers arrested for kidnapping and assault

Two Bangladeshi workers have been detained from Male’ on suspicion of kidnapping and assaulting a fellow expatriate worker in order to rob him of money.

In a statement on Sunday, a police spokesperson said the incident took place on August 14 at a guesthouse in the Machangolhi district of Male’ City.

The two suspects were detained from the scene of the crime at around 02:20 am.

The suspects were identified as:

  • Sadiqul Mia, 37, Bangladesh
  • Mohamed Azeezul, 37, Bangladesh

They are accused of unlawfully holding a fellow Bangladeshi national at the guesthouse, and assaulting and robbing him of “a large sum of” money.

The duo was presented before the Criminal Court for an extension to their remand on Saturday.

The court extended their remand by 15 days.

At the court hearing, the police said that both suspects were arrested from the scene of the crime and had actively participated in kidnapping and assaulting the victim.

Court documents show both suspects are undocumented.

The police also told the court that the victim sustained injuries in the incident, and submitted photos from the crime scene as well as photos of the injuries sustained by the victim as evidence against the suspects.

The case is further investigation by the police.
