Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) has endorsed main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) presidential candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, in this year’s presidential elections.

The party came to the decision at its National Council meeting held on Friday evening. Thirty-six members were in attendance for the vote on forming the coalition from which 34 voted in favor of endorsing President Solih while two members had voted against.

MDP, on Thursday, held discussions with MDA regarding forming the coalition. MDP was represented by Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail and Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain (Bigey) at the meeting.

MDA’s President, Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, as he believed it was not favorable for him to contest in this year’s presidential election, submitted a resolution to a convening of the party’s National Council held on Thursday against the party contesting in the election.

All members who attended the meeting unanimously voted in favor of the party’s leader’s resolution, and decided to move forward by forming a coalition with another political party.

The invitation extended by President Solih to take on the election together has only so far been accepted by MDA and Adhaalath Party.

Meanwhile, Jumhoory Party has put forth a resolution on the agenda for the party’s congress scheduled for today and tomorrow regarding the presidential elections.

MDA also held discussions with opposition PPM-PNC coalition before deciding to back MDP.
