President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has expressed gratitude to Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) following the party’s decision to form a coalition with the main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
MDA came to the decision at its National Council meeting held on Friday evening. Thirty-six members were in attendance for the vote on forming the coalition from which 34 voted in favor of endorsing President Solih, MDP’s presidential candidate, while two members had voted against.
Therewith, MDA is set to form a coalition with MDP.
In a tweet on Friday night, President Solih welcomed the decision and thanked MDA.
“We will work towards carrying forward with the journey we commenced to bring peace and development for the Maldives,” the tweet also read.
MDP, in a statement on Friday night, also welcomed MDA’s decision to form the coalition, and thanked the party.
The statement read that MDP believes MDA came to the decision for the sake of Maldivian people –in acknowledgment of the peace established across Maldives during President Solih’s current term.
MDA decided to form the coalition after deciding against rallying a candidate of the party for the elections.
Ahead of deciding to back MDP, MDA also held discussions with the opposition PPM=PNC coalition on Thursday.
