Kudagiri – a picnic island developed for the residents of the populous Male’ City – has been officially opened by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The island was opened Saturday morning in a function attended by President Solih, First Lady Fazna Ahmed, and Vice President Faisal Naseem.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, President Solih noted that residents of the congested Maldivian capital do not get to enjoy the beaches the country is so famous for – especially after the loss of Kuda Bandos.
He described Kudagiri as an important project, conducted improve the health and lifestyle of the residents of the congested capital.
President Solih said he has asked relevant parties to expedite work on another island being developed next to Kudagiri as camping grounds for school students.
“The island is being developed students can go on trips and camp there, as well as Scouts and Girl Guides,” he said.
Speaking at the ceremony, Housing Development Corporation (HDC)’s Managing Director Ahmed Athif said Kudagiri had been developed by the corporation with massive support from Planning Ministry and other state-owned enterprises.
Athif said it was a huge priority of the government to provide a happy and peaceful environment for the residents of Male’.

Entrance is free for locals on weekends and public holidays, and free throughout the year for children under the age of two and adults above the age of 65.

Kudagiri offers a variety of accommodations, including huts and day-use rooms.
The island has a security team to maintain security and has 40 CCTV cameras installed.
Police will provide backup during weekends and public holidays.
HDC warns that action will be taken against anyone who damages the property in Kudagiri, and anyone who engages in violence will be permanently banned from the island.
