Male’ City Council has revealed that over MVR 27,000 has been raised so far through the ‘Chaalu Miskiy’ fundraising event which will be used for renovations of mosques in Male’ area for next Ramadan.
The event aimed at raising funds to upkeep and renovate mosques based at Male’ City, Hulhumale’ and Vilimale’ kicked off this evening. Male’ City Council reported having raised a total of MVR 27,671.67 between 4:00pm and 6:00pm.
Speaking at the ceremony to kick off the fundraiser – Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that upkeeping of mosques is the task allocated the highest priority from Male’ City Council’s strategic action plan.
He emphasized on the lack of funds from the government for the purpose despite upkeeping of mosques being delegated to the council. On this note, he said that only MVR 1 million is allocated for the state budget annually to upkeep mosques.
“Our vision is that the nicest monuments in Male’ should be its mosques. Within the past 18 months, the council has done this work to their best ability. Some mosques need to be repainted; others need new light bulbs. The toilets have to be fixed. We request the public, businesspersons and well-wishers to donate in order to undertake this work,” Mayor Muizzu had said.
Mayor Muizzu said that different mosques required different extents of renovations – whereas the council’s goal is to complete the work through this event before the start of next Ramadan.
The event which was held at the Artificial Beach area this evening kicked off with children’s activities. A separate stall for each mosque in Male’ area had been placed at the event – to allow persons to donate to particular mosques of their choice.
In the course of the event, religious scholars will also be giving lectures. Male’ City Council said that people who wished to donate after the event will have that opportunity.
The event will be held on Saturday as well from 9:00am to 18:00pm with breaks for prayer times.
