The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has paid the fine imposed for constructing its new office building without the required permits, Male' City Mayor Adam Azim confirmed on Monday.
The five‑storey building in H. Veyovilaage was inaugurated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu earlier this month. Shortly after the opening, Mayor Azim stated that the structure had been built without council approval.
As a result, the property owner was fined MVR 128,000 on December 25.
However, the owner, Shafee’a Zubair, denied that the building was constructed without permits. She said she had requested approval from the council to change the building’s drawings and insisted she had followed the required procedures.
Mayor Azim told Sun that the fine has now been paid and a revised drawing has been submitted. He said the council will proceed according to the approved plans and ensure the building complies with regulations.
The PNC began using the premises in July 2024. The hall was previously occupied by The Democrats before the building underwent major renovations and was expanded to five floors. The newly inaugurated office features a large LED screen facing the artificial beach, intended to display party information and broadcast major events.
The PNC is currently the largest political party in the Maldives, with 74,048 registered members, according to the Elections Commission. The party aims to increase its membership to 100,000.
