Police: 6 locals, 26 expats arrested for prostitution in 2022

Maldives Police Services on Thursday revealed that its various operations in 2022 related to prostitution and human traffic led to the arrest of 32 individuals.

According to the statistics publisized by the authority, in 2022, a total of 25 operations for prostitution and human trafficking were conducted. Of this, 14 were based on information received via intelligence.

Meanwhile, the remaining 11 operations were joint efforts by the Police and Maldives Immigration.

The operations which saw the arrest of individuals from both sexes include six Maldivians and 26 expatriates.

In 2022, due to prostitution and human trafficking, 28 expatriates were deported. This includes some who were arrested before last year as well.

Police said that 11 of these reported human trafficking and prostitution cases were filed and investigated in 2022.

They also noted that the investigation for six of these cases was still ongoing, two of these cases have been forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office. Three cases have also been filed, as per the Police.
