Opposition People’s National Congress’ (PNC) leader Abdul Raheem Abdulla, on Sunday, has assured to undertake all possible efforts to “save” the opposition leader, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom who was found guilty of bribery and money laundering hours earlier.

Criminal Court found Yameen guilty of taking a bribe and money laundering in connection to the sale of V. Aarah for resort development on Sunday afternoon.

He is accused of abusing his position and taking a USD 1 million bribe to facilitate the sale of Aarah to Yoosuf Naeem, a former parliamentary representative for Felidhoo constituency, and laundering the money.

The state has also charged Naeem with giving the bribe.

As Yameen has been found guilty on both charges – he faces a prison sentence of at least eight years; minimum of three years for accepting a bribe and a minimum of five years of money laundering.

However, the prosecution is demanding a 19-year prison sentence for Yameen; an eight-year prison sentence for taking a bribe, and an 11-year prison sentence for money laundering. That is the maximum sentence, which the prosecution cited was adequate in consideration of the position Yameen held at the time the crime was committed.

The sentencing is yet to be issued.

Briefing the press outside of Criminal Court, Adhurey emphasized the importance of Maldivian citizens standing by the opposition coalition at this difficult time. He added that no matter the outcome, Yameen will be elected president in 2023.

“Requesting our supporters in atolls to depart to Male’ without further delay. Have to save President Yameen," he added.

Adhurey also alleged influence by India in Yameen’s trial.

“We just heard the verdict. The verdict was changed as India wanted. This is not a fair verdict, it is Haram. Do not be disheartened, President Yameen still stands strong,” Adhurey had said.

Emphasizing that Yameen is innocent – Adhurey said that the adverse result of an unjust verdict will only be seen later.

“What I have to say to leaders who wish to find a place in the Maldivian political arena after jailing President Yameen, is to forget it. Even if President Yameen is placed in home confinement, he is our candidate. PPM supporters will not vote for any other leader,” he had said.
