Nasheed: Projects in Thinadhoo left unfinished

President of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed, has stated that there are a lot of unfinished projects in GDh. Thoddoo and that this will negatively affect many.

Nasheed visited Gdh. Thinadhoo last Friday, and announced that he will be running for the presidential candidacy in the upcoming presidential elections in 2023.

In an interview for Sun after he concluded the trip, Nasheed praised the work of the island’s council.

He, however, highlighted the fact that major projects on the island have gone a long time without reaching an end.

“Laying tar on the streets for example. Hasn’t been completed in the past 4 years. There are a lot of projects like this that haven’t been finished,” Nasheed said.

As per Nasheed, an island with as huge a population as Thinadhoo, will pose problems for the people if there are potholes and nonfunctional roads for long periods of time. He said that it's very sad that such projects have not been finished.

He also said, regarding high-ranking political officials of the island being called to come to Male’ by the government impending his visit, that he has gotten word that that is how it happened.

But as there is a population of 12,000 people on Thinadhoo, there is no way to be sure if that is truly how it is, Nasheed shared.

He highlighted that the promise of a parliamentary system in Maldives has not been fulfilled by MDP in this interview as well. He also said that in the anonymous vote taken to change the political system, a large number of people are in favour of the parliamentary system.

However, other political leaders have all expressed their negative opinions on the matter.

Nasheed said he will be visiting different regions of the Maldives, as MDP has announced that it will hold elections to select the presidential candidate for next year’s election.

While MDP has not announced a date for the primary elections, the current President of the Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, has also begun campaigning for a second term in office.
