Wizz Air launches Male'-Abu Dhabi flights, tickets start at MVR 1,300

Wizz Air's first flight lands at the Velana International Airport (VIA) on October 4, 2022.

The ultra-low-cost carrier Wizz Air Abu Dhabi has launched scheduled operations to Maldives.

The airline will operate flights to Maldives four times a week; on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

The first flight landed at the Velana International Airport (VIA) at 04:50 pm Tuesday.

Speaking during the event held at the airport to welcome the airline’s first flight, Maldivian Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom said that coming at a time when surging fuel prices had pushed up the cost of air travel, the launch of Wizz Air’s operations to Maldives is a welcome relief.

“Given that Wizz Air is a mid-class low-cost airline, the shocks to demand due to high air fare can be mitigated,” he said.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi’s Managing Director Michael Berlouis said the airline was pleased to launch operations to Maldives.

Tickets can be booked via the airline’s website or mobile app.

Wizz Air had launched its operations in 2014. And between 2014-2019, the airline carried 200 million passengers.

The airline states its goal is to offer affordable travel to all.
