Police have made two arrests on suspicion they used the videos MD Alamgir, a young Bangladeshi national recorded of himself having sex with multiple men, including several high-profile Maldivians, for blackmail and extortion.

Alamgir, 26, was arrested on July 12, after videos leaked online purportedly showing him engaging in sex with multiple men.

He was convicted of engaging in homosexuality back in August. He signed a plea deal with the state and received seven months in prison.

In a press conference in June, after the videos began leaking on social media, Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Riyaz said the police became of several people being blackmailed with sex videos back in March. He also said police had identified some of the people involved in the blackmail ring.

A senior police official told Sun that five people had been involved in blackmailing people with the videos, and that two of them were arrested under court order Sunday.

Work is in progress to arrest the other three, said the official.

The Prosecutor General’s Office recently filed fresh charges against Alamgir – 40 counts of production of pornographic content.
