Dhiraagu, together with Bike Maldives, the official bicycle association of the Maldives, has announced the return of the Mamen Inter-School Cycling Championship after a two-year break due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The Mamen Inter-School Cycling Championship 2022 will mark the third edition of the tournament, which was previously held in 2018 and 2019, before it was suspended due to the pandemic.

The Mamen Inter-School Cycling Championship 2022 was launched in a special press conference at the Dhiraagu headquarters in Male’ City on Thursday morning.

Speaking at the press conference, Dhiraagu’s Assistant Manager – Brand, Naiya Shareef said the company was delighted to support Bike Maldives as a development partner for the tournament.

“We hope to foster an interest of cycling amongst school children while promoting the importance of a healthy, sustainable lifestyle from a young age,” she said.

Bike Maldives’ President Zulaikha Hasan Didi said that as a member of the International Cycling Union (UCI), the association gets many opportunities to participate in international-level games and competitions.

“With this tournament, we want to create and train top cyclists who can utilize these chances and represent Maldives abroad. We thank Dhiraagu for their continuous support in contributing towards the development of Maldives’ cycling,” she said.

This year’s tournament will take place on September 17 at the Cycling Track in Hulhumale’ Phase II.

All school children are eligible to participate in this tournament.

Registration will close on September 8.

Students can register online through a Google form, which will be provided to them via their respective schools and also circulated through the Dhiraagu and Bike Maldives’ social media handles.

Ten events will take place during the one-day tournament. They are:

  • Under 11 (Nursery to Grade 4) – 1K Fun Ride
  • Under 13 (Grade 5, 6) – 200m Sprint
  • Under 13 (Grade 5, 6) – 1K Sprint
  • Under 15 (Grade 7, 8) – 200m Sprint
  • Under 15 (Grade 7, 8) – 1K Sprint
  • Under 17 (Grade 9, 10) – 200m Sprint
  • Under 17 (Grade 9, 10) – 3K Ride
  • Under 19 (Grade 11, 12) – 200m Sprint
  • Under 19 (Grade 11, 12) – 3K Ride
  • 3K Team Pursuit

According to Dhiraagu, three male and female winners will be chosen from each competitive category, excluding the 1K Fun Ride.

Dhiraagu said it remains committed to supporting and organizing events that contribute positively to the environment, promotes community engagement, and enhances the experiences of school children.
