Kinbidhoo MP Mohamed Nashiz has been elected as the new chair of the Commonwealth Association of Public Accounts Committees (CAPAC).
MP Nashiz, who also currently serves as the chair of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, was elected to the post after competing with Trinidad and Tobago and Seychelles.
CAPAC comprises of the chairs of commonwealth nations’ Public Accounts Committee.
“The work being done here is to find the most effective way transparency, value for money and for Public Accounts Committee to be made accountable for the government’s spending,” Nashiz detailed whilst speaking to Sun.
Nashiz underscored having learned many things after joining CAPAC in 2019
“One thing learned in this regard, is setting aside political views while working on financial issues and taking the best agreeable decision in light of the issue and its facts,” he had said.
In this regard, he said that the Public Accounts Committee had followed the ‘cross party’ policy in connection to the corruption case in acquiring ventilators for COVID-19 patients.
Nashiz said his election as CAPAC’s chair will significantly benefit the Maldives. He said additional techniques will be introduced in the Maldives, and efforts will be undertaken to improve the works of the Public Accounts Committee.
CAPAC came into inception in 2015. The previous chair of the association was UK MP, and the country’s Public Accounts Committee’s Chair Meg Hiller.
