Parliament votes to dismiss Serjeant-at-Arms Haleem

Parliament, on Wednesday, has concluded to dismiss Serjeant-at-Arms Mohamed Haleeem.

At today’s parliamentary sitting, the decision to dismiss Haleem received the unanimous votes of 25 parliamentarians who took part in the vote. One member in attendance had abstained from voting.

Haleem was suspended indefinitely in January of last year. He was suspended with pay, regarding a case under investigation by the Parliament’s General Committee.

General Committee had concluded their probe on Haleem, and sent the report formulated on their finding to Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed back in May of last year.

Whilst the Committee had held closed-door meetings regarding Haleem’s case, due to its nature – he has also been removed from the Viber group comprising of administrative staff working at the People’s Majlis.

Serjeant-at-Arms is responsible for the security at the People’s Majlis. Speaker Nasheed has previously alleged that an attempt was made to install bugging equipment at one of the rooms at Majlis to eavesdrop.

The post, Serjeant-at-Arms, was created in 2013. Haleem was appointed to the post of Serjeant-at-Arms of the Parliament on October 31, 2013.
