Alamgiri - a young Bangladeshi national who has admitted to engaging in sexual acts with several high-profile Maldivian men has requested a confessional agreement.

Alamgiri was arrested on July 12. The court initially remanded him to the custody of police for five days. His remand was extended by 15 days again on July 18.

He is accused of recording himself engaging in sexual relations with men. The videos were later used to blackmail them.

Some of the videos were recently leaked over social media. One of them shows Alamgiri allegedly engaging in sexual acts with Ahmed Nazim Abdul Sattar, a prominent lawyer and younger brother of Parliament speaker, former president Mohamed Nasheed, and former Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel Nasheed).

Sun received a video in June in which Alamgiri apologized to the Maldivian people, and said he had repented for his sins.

He said he was a poor man, and did not know rights from wrong.

“I have repented. Maldivians, please forgive me,” he said in the video.

However, many, including religious scholars said that the matter needed to be investigated and appropriate punishments has to be given as well.

Sun has come to know that a decision will be made at the earliest on Alamgiri’s request for a confessional.

Such an agreement will be made between the accused and the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Discussions will be held between both parties and if the accused confesses to the crime, an agreement will be written based on that.

According to the Penal Code, under such an agreement, the prosecution can request a punishment that is not less than the original one.

As per the information obtained by Sun, Alamgiri has had homosexual relations with over 100 people.
