President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih arrived in Kigali, Rwanda, on Thursday, to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2022.

He was accompanied by First Lady Fazna Ahmed and a high-level delegation of government officials.

He was welcomed upon arrival at the Kigali International Airport by Rwandan Minister of Local Government Jean Marie Vianney Gatabazi.

In a statement on Thursday, the President’s Office said the visit signified President Solih’s commitment to engage with the international community, especially with the Commonwealth member states, in promoting democracy, human rights, good governance, multilateralism, and world peace.

President’s Office said the Maldivian administration sought to engage in the exchange of expertise and assistance with regard to building inclusive, resilient, and environmentally conscious communities through such multilateral meetings.

President Solih is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders to strengthen the Maldives’ role in the international community, advance its shared interests, and contribute to resolving global issues on the sidelines of the meeting.

Leaders from 54 countries are set to gather in Kigali for the meeting, where discussions will focus on youth, women, business and civil society.

The leaders are also scheduled to meet privately at the Commonwealth Leaders Retreat to discuss collaboration on the global platform and Commonwealth priorities.

CHOGM 2022 is the first meeting to be held since the Maldives’ re-accession to the Commonwealth of Nations on February 1, 2020.
