State Electric Company (STELCO) has signed an agreement to provide waste management services in K. Maafushi, making it the first company to offer all utility services.

The agreement for waste management services was signed by STELCO’s General Manager Ahmed Shafeeu and Maafushi Council’s President Hussain Salah in a ceremony at the STELCO headquarters in Male’ City on Wednesday.

Under the agreement, STELCO will establish a modern waste management center in Maafushi, with waste segregation and recycling facilities.

Speaking at the ceremony, STELCO’s Managing Director Ahmed Shareef said the company planned on conducting more waste management projects in neighboring islands.

“The next projects will commence in two neighboring islands of K. Gulhi and Guraidhoo. I want to announce we plan on conducting more projects in the future in light of our experience in Maafushi,” he said.

Maafushi Council’s President Salah said Maafushi designated an area for waste disposal back in 1999, and had been plagued with numerous challenges since.

“Some of the biggest challenges we face include the accumulation of non-biodegradable waste, new types of waste, and lack of resources to manage waste,” he said.

Salah said Maafushi produced over 10 tonnes of waste daily, and the project offered a solution to the issues facing the island.

Maafushi is the hub of local tourism in Maldives, and has STELCO’s largest consumer base, outside of Male’ City.
