Local man sentenced to 57 years in jail for sexual abuse of wife’s sister, showing pornography

Criminal Court has sentenced a Maldivian man to 57 years in prison for the sexual abuse of wife’s younger sister, performing a sexual act in the presence of a minor and showing pornography to minor.

The prosecution had raised five charges against the man – out of which he was found guilty of three charges. Subsequently, he must serve a 57-year jail sentence ordered by the Criminal Court.

Charges against the man:

•  Carrying out a sexual act with a family member who is a minor (25 years in jail)
•  A person in a position of trust performing a sexual act in the presence of a minor, for the purpose of showing to the minor (17 years in jail)
•  A person in a position of trust showing pornography to minor (15 years in jail)
• Touching a minor’s body with sexual intent (not proven)
• Possession of pornography in Maldives (not proven)

In order to conceal the identity of the victim who a minor – the name of the assailant who was found guilty has been omitted. Moreover, Criminal Court has also hidden their ruling.

Nevertheless, Sun has learned that the middle-aged man belonging to central island in the Maldives had performed a sexual act in the presence of the younger sister of his then-wife, who was a minor.

Criminal Court had sentenced the man to jail on Tuesday after two years and nine months since he has been placed in custody.
