MP Siyam condemns BJP officials’ slander of Prophet Muhammed

Leader of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed has condemned the slander of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) by two senior officials of India’s ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP).

Condemning the remarks made – MP Siyam stressed that the Indian government should not allow anyone to disrespect the Islamic religion. He also added that such remarks made by people who spread hate regarding religions were absolutely unacceptable.

Prophet Muhammad was slandered by BJP’s National Spokesperson Nupur Sharma and New Delhi’s Media Operation Head Naveen Kumar Jindal. Whilst Sharma has been suspended from the party over the matter, Jindal has been expelled.

Their remarks slandering Prophet Muhammed has been condemned by the Maldivian government, Adhaalath Party, Jumhoory Party, Opposition Coalition and Maldives National Party amongst other local entities in separate statements released on Monday.

Meanwhile, many foreign relations bodies of Islamic countries had summoned Indian ambassadors – handing over official documents denouncing the remarks made by the officials and demanding apologies from the Indian government and BJP. These countries include Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabiya, Kuwait and Oman.

In the statement released by BJP over the matter, the party said that they respect all religions – adding that it is not the party’s policy to slander any religious figures or symbols. Nevertheless, they apologized for the remarks made by a member of the party and assured such a thing will not happen again.
