City council begins planting date palm trees in Male’

Male’ City Council began planting date palm trees on Tuesday, under the program to plant 100,000 trees in the capital. 

The first of the date palm trees were planted at the industrial village on Tuesday evening. 

Speaking at the event, Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said the council planned on planting 200 date palm trees. 

“We plan on planting date palm trees along Boduthakurufaanu Magu,” he said.

Muizzu said that the trees will be taken care of under the guidance of professionals. 

He said that the city council hopes to complete planting date palm trees within two months. 

The program to plant 100,000 trees in Male’ City, aimed at making the congested Maldivian capital greener, was launched in January. Mango trees were planted on Kanba Aisa Rani Hingun last week. 

Muizzu said the city council planned on planting flower and fruit trees on the streets. 

The city council aims to plant 100,000 trees in Male’ City by the end of the year.
