Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded a project by the Fisheries Ministry to design and develop a harbor in K. Kanduoiy giri – an island under the management of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).

The contract was signed by MTCC’s CEO Adam Azim and Fisheries Ministry’s Finance Executive Eenas Naseer on Wednesday afternoon.

The current facility developed by MIFCO in Kanduoiy giri has the capacity to process yellowfin tuna. However, the poor state and low depth of the current harbor, makes it difficult for incoming and outgoing vessels to enter and dock alongside this harbor.

As a result, vessels have not been able to use the harbor for yellowfin tuna processing, which is also a loss for the MIFCO facility.

MTCC said the completion of the project will ensure that the fishing vessels have a harbor with adequate depth and protection, allowing them to safely dock alongside the harbor to attain service from the MIFCO facility.

Scope of works for the project include harbor dredging operations of 10,000 cubic meters, channel dredging of 10,000 cubic meters, construction of a 50-meter breakwater, a 63-meter revetment, a 125-meter quay wall, installation of 215-meter sheet pile, installation of harbor pavement, installation of harbor and navigational lights.

Work will also be done to install a fresh-water and salt-water line on the harbor.

MTCC will also conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), which the company said will be completed with the involvement and contribution of all stakeholders.

The project is valued at MVR 36 million.

MTCC is required to complete the project within 365 days.
