Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed has voiced concern over the delay in work of parliamentary committees.

He voiced his concern while opening Tuesday’s parliamentary sitting.

Nasheed said that a research by the Parliament regarding the companies bill – which is in the debate stage – had been shared with parliamentarians to assist them.

Nasheed said that parliamentary committees were currently reviewing some 25 bills, and that all committee members must try to improve the speed of the work.

“It must be the goal of all parliamentarians to reduce the time bills are in various parliamentary committees. It’s important that parliamentarians have an attitude of completing work on bills as soon as possible, instead of having the bills unfinished in committees,” he said.

Nasheed has expressed concern over the speed of parliamentary committees on numerous occasions.

The government has announced it intends to submit 36 bills during the current parliamentary session. They include 14 bills to enact new laws, and 22 bills to amend existing laws.
